The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
